There were weeks that Nicola MacNaughton dreaded looking at the company’s bank account, fearing that OC wouldn’t be able to make payroll. At one point, bankruptcy was a real threat. Nicola had been through a devastating downsizing once before and the current state of the company has Nicola worried again. She called us for a Balanced Scorecard and a set of Metrics but there was much that needed to be done before we could get to that scorecard.

Occupational Concepts (OC) is an occupational therapy clinic based in Moncton. Their experienced and passionate team of health professionals go to work every day to help their clients get back to living.

“The purpose of our organization has never been a challenge… The challenge was how to run the organization in behind that to support our therapists as they serve our clients.” – Nicola MacNaughton, President & CEO

OC started its relationship with Symplicity in early 2014 and engaged in a full transformation. In the first year, we completed multiple improvement projects together. First we tackled the cash constraints of the organization and improved the Accounts Receivable process. Next we helped increase the Value Add hours with clients. Hovering near 60%, with some therapists as low as 41%, we worked on two projects to eliminate the checking, chasing, and correcting as well as the constraints in report writing and scheduling. The result of the projects increased the amount of time therapists were able to spend with clients to more than 90% of their week. It was a game changer for the organization.

In the intern, Occupational Concepts religiously adopted the Calendar of Commitments, Made consistent strategic choice, trained four individuals in NOVO Execution, and began to manage their own Cadence of Improvement.

“Our clients are ‘getting back to living’ faster, we’re making more to invest in growth, and our employees are happier.” – Nicola MacNaughton

Nicola no longer has to brace herself when she goes to check the company’s bank account. They’ve seen a 35% improvement in the bottom line. Occupational Concepts was struggling to survive and now they are thriving.
